Central Baptist Church was formed in 1894 from part of what was once Grenada Baptist Church. The first meeting house for the new church was located on the east side of Line Street. The original structure burned that summer after a kerosene chandelier fell while being lit for an evening service. The church building was rebuilt and Central remained in that location until the growth of the church required they seek out a larger space. In July 9, 1916, the land was purchased at the current location, and in 1917, the present building was constructed by J. E. Greene of Birmingham and has remained the meeting house for Central Baptist Church for the past 109 years.
Central Baptist Church is unique in that, in its 132 year history, it has had only eight pastors.
